The latest version of Bluetooth, which promises to simplify pairing and reduce power consumption, has been ratified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Key enhancements in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate version 2.1) include improved pairing with a consistent process.

A Bluetooth-enabled headset can now be added by turning it on and selecting ‘Add Headset’ from a mobile phone menu. Security against eavesdropping has also been improved by the introduction of a six-digit passkey.

“The simplified pairing process enabled by Version 2.1+ EDR has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from media, analysts and member companies,” said Michael Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG.

“This leap forward in usability further improves the Bluetooth experience and makes the technology easy for anyone to enjoy.”

He added: “Also, in our effort to unite wireless technologies, Version 2.1 + EDR enables the ultra short range technology called Near Field Communication (NFC) for a pairing scenario that is as simple as touching the products together.”

The Group claimed the new version can also boost battery life by up to five times on certain Bluetooth products including mice, keyboards, watches, home-sensor networks and medical devices.
