Toast has been the de facto standard in Mac CD authoring software for as long as there have been CD recorders. The previous release, version 5, was the first to be compatible with Mac OS X, but it didn't really offer anything new. With Toast 6, Roxio has made the package more versatile by taking the lead from its Windows package, Easy CD & DVD Creator.
For starters, Toast 6 has been subtly redesigned. It improves on version 5's tabbed interface, with buttons across the top for creating data, audio or video discs and disc copies, and there's a new Settings drawer to select what type of disc you want to create. A Space Indicator tells you how full the disc will be, and a Recorder Settings sheet helps provide control over the burning process.
Drag-and-drop functions have also been developed. For example, if you drag a folder of photos on to the Toast window it will be converted into a VCD or DVD slideshow. Other new features include Plug & Burn, for creating a VCD or DVD when you plug in a camcorder and Toast anywhere, which allows you to share your CD-R drive over a network.
A suite of add-on software makes Toast more versatile. CD Spin Doctor gets the best from analogue recordings, Discus RE creates disc labels and case inserts, while Motion Pictures adds effects to photo slideshows.
A Toast It option has been added to contextual menus in the Finder, so you just have to Control-click on any item to instantly burn it to a CD, and there's a also a simple backup utility called Deja Vu.
