Accounting software is generally only loved by accountants; the best it can hope for is to be appreciated by the rest of us. MYOB Accounting Plus 15 is aimed at the small to medium business that needs to keep track of stock and payroll as well as the normal day to day costs and income.

Starting out can be a big headache, especially in the middle of a financial year, but thankfully Accounting Plus makes this as easy as possible with opening balances for all accounts including money owed by customers.

MYOB have added information pop ups explaining the changes in this new version.

The opening interface has remained unchanged with a simple flowchart illustrating each part of the accounting process.

This helps users to understand what to do next whatever their level of accounting knowledge. A to do list of reminders keeps track of work in progress and includes short cuts to the relevant window.

Key to the usefulness of any accounting software is whether it can quickly illustrate the financial state of the company and Accounting Plus does very well.

All the important reports are just a couple of clicks away in the Analysis menu and they can be used to compare performance with the previous year or against the budgets set earlier in the year.

A total of 190 reports can be produced. Showing a report onscreen offers the opportunity to drill down into figures. There are plenty of ways to output reports to other applications including Excel, pdf and html. Text output can be simple or delimited with tabs or commas.

A useful new feature is the ability to store transactions after a year end. They cannot be changed but can be used for performance comparison or budgeting - this can be a real time saver.

Accounting Plus can also be used to keep track of the stock held by a company over several different sites. Stock can be products actually made by the company or those bought in to resell.

One of the biggest stresses for growing companies is the employment of staff. This increases costs but also increases the amount of paper work, including the reports that must be sent to the Inland Revenue.

This is also an area where the user auditing is important as it clearly shows who has had access or changed payroll information. As well as regular salaried staff, Accounting Plus can track staff paid by the hour and uses this information for monthly payments.

Updates for new tax tables from the Inland Revenue can be downloaded from the MYOB website. Sadly the updates are not handled within Accounting Plus but start up an internet browser - something that could be improved on.

More than one user can access the accounts at a time, each with their own password. It is also possible to restrict the accounts that a user can access, useful for keeping sensitive information, such as salaries, private.

With its proven track record, Accounting Plus 15 from MYOB is a good choice for growing businesses who want to keep track of costs as well as maintain an audit trail.
