Psion has launched an upgraded version of its Revo handheld PC, called the Revo Plus, which includes free Wap and internet browsers and expanded memory.

The device comes bundled with Opera Software's web browser, which includes 128-bit SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption technology, making it suitable for share dealing, and online banking and purchasing. It also includes a Wap browser, compatible with Wap version 1.1.

Psion said users of the previous model of the Revo could purchase the browsers separately for £20 to £30 each, but warned that they would place a strain on the Revo's 8Mb memory which is not upgradeable. The Revo Plus has a 16Mb memory.

The company said the expanded memory lets users store large amounts of information offline, potentially reducing time spent online. The company also said that Wap navigation is easier on the Revo than on a mobile phone because of its point and click navigation, keyboard and larger screen.

The device has a built-in modem which can be connected to compatible mobile phones via cable or infrared.

Harvey Roberts, Revo Plus product manager, said: "Because the new Revo Plus offers one of the most advanced levels of protection for internet users on handhelds today, we expect interest not only from consumers, but from companies looking for a more secure way for employees to access information on their corporate intranet and extranet."

The Revo Plus is in the shops from today (6 September) and costs £299.95 including VAT. It comes with a docking station and PsiWin 2.3 PC connectivity software, a contacts database, a Microsoft compatible word processor and spreadsheet, and two rechargeable batteries providing up to 10 hours of normal usage.

The company has also launched PsionWap, a Wap portal designed for the new Revo, giving access to UK content including news, sport, weather and location guides.
