Microsoft blows into Florida with Visual Studio 2005

Microsoft ignored the apocalyptic weather threatening Florida yesterday to unveil the beta version of its Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition at the VSLive! exhibition in Orlando.

Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition is the latest edition to the Visual Studio developer software family, nestling between the low-end Express aimed at amateur developers, and the top-level Visual Studio 2005 Team System, which includes project management tools for developers working on group projects.

The company said the Standard Edition is aimed at occasional developers working in small organisations, and offers simple development tools together with richer features for building durable and data-driven web applications.

"Microsoft's goal was to move away from the idea that one tool fits all developer needs," said S. Somasegar, corporate vice president of Microsoft's developer division, in a statement.

Somasegar added that Visual Studio also provides "increased performance, scalability, reliability and developer productivity benefits".

Microsoft was unable to comment on prices for the final edition, but said the product would ship to Europe early in 2005.

The firm also opened its Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partners, a forum for Visual Basic and web developers to swap add-in tools and components from more than 200 registered members.
