Novell today claimed that it has developed the richest ever Linux distro in the form of SuSE Linux Professional 9.3.

The latest version of its retail operating system product combines the advanced applications tools demanded by experienced users, and the ease of installation and security that will appeal to Linux newbies, according to Novell.

SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 ships with over 3,000 open source packages in addition to the core operating system.

The bundle includes a set of desktop applications, comprehensive documentation, installation support and "convenient installation media".

For general purpose users, Novell has included the latest OpenOffice suite and Firefox web browser, email and instant messaging tools, digital photo organisers, multimedia viewers, mobility support and basic networking capabilities.

More advanced users will find tools for setting up a secure home network, running a web server, developing applications, and creating a virtualised environment.

The SuSE distro also delivers technology previews to the open source community, including Xen for virtualisation, Beagle desktop search and Linphone for voice over IP.

SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 begins shipping globally today with a suggested retail price of $99.95 or €77.54. Customers of earlier versions can purchase an update edition for $59.95 or €51.86.
