Skype users plug into videoconferencing

A US firm today unveiled a plug-in designed to enable Skype users to engage in video, voice and data sharing calls.

The beta release of vSkype from Santa Cruz Networks allows users to see who they are talking to while sharing applications, spreadsheets or photos in real time.

"VSkype is a natural extension to Skype and allows the community to come together in interesting new ways," said Stuart Jacobson, chief executive at Santa Cruz Networks.

The beta software allows users to conduct secure video calls in groups of two to 200 and share applications, spreadsheets, presentations and photos with others during a call.

Santa Cruz Networks claimed that professional vSkype users will be provided with value added services including various call controls, white boarding, meeting moderation, bandwidth control and recording and archiving tools.

"Video is one of the most highly requested features, and is a natural extension from where we're going " said Skype chief executive and co-founder Niklas Zennström.

"We offer the Skype API to expand quality voice and messaging communications around the globe.

"Skype is now an open platform and we are keen to watch the world's innovative developer community integrate the Skype application to extend the potential of global communications."

The production version of vSkype will include both peer-to-peer and server-based configurations, improved group audio and tighter integration with the Skype IM. The plug-in works on any Windows 2000/XP PC running Skype.
