HP today unveiled power
management and cooling technologies for its enterprise servers and racks which
it claims can significantly reduce power consumption in enterprise IT shops.
Applying HP's modular cooling system can allow IT departments to deploy three
times as many kilowatts in server capacity per rack over current applications,
according to the company.
The system cools servers by running chilled water through the front of the
rack.
HP also unveiled its 10000 G2 Series, a unified rack that accommodates all
the vendor's rack-mounted storage and server products.
The new series is designed to replace a collection of seven incompatible
racks, and offers increased cooling efficiency through convection cooling and
improved ventilation.
The vendor also launched a management module for its racks' power
distribution units, allowing organisations to centrally monitor and manage the
power distribution in server farms.
The latest racks and management module are scheduled for availability on 6
February.
Heat production in data centres is an increasing problem in IT organisations.
Current generation servers produce more heat than previous models because they
run smaller, warmer chips, and vendors are designing ever-denser server farms.
Recent data from analyst firm
IDC indicated that it costs
about $400,000 a year to power a farm with 1,000 servers.
