Hitachi builds liquid cooling system

Hitachi is bringing liquid cooling systems into the mainstream by installing them on HP xw9400 Workstations.

The AMD Opteron powered systems will be going on sale shortly, and Hitachi will extend liquid cooling to other higher end server systems if it proves a success.

"HP is pleased to be the first workstation manufacturer in the US to offer Hitachi's Liquid-Cooling System in one of our most high-performance workstations," said Jeff Wood, director of product marketing at HP's Workstation Global Business Unit.

"Hitachi's proven Liquid Cooling System will be a great benefit for demanding power users in digital content creation, scientific research, manufacturing, and oil and gas exploration applications."

Liquid cooling has been used by the gaming community for some years, since it is far more effective at dissipating heat that fan systems that rely on metal to conduct heat.

The thermoconductivity of water is far more effective than metal and this allows the processor to work faster and consume less power.

"We are assured that the HP xw9400 Workstation with Hitachi's Liquid Cooling System will provide end users with a quiet and comfortable environment," said Hideaki Gemma, general manager at Hitachi's IT Thermal Solution Center.

"Working with HP is the tip of the iceberg, and we anticipate that other workstation manufacturers will follow suit."
