Sony and Sky have formed a joint venture company to bring on-demand entertainment content to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in the UK and Ireland.

The company will consist of equal board level representation from Sky and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE).

The pairing will initially focus exclusively on delivering video content to the PSP, providing a range of video and film content from Sky's collection to the approximately 2.3 million PSP owners in the UK and Ireland.

There are already discussions with entertainment content providers across Europe to introduce the service to European PSP owners in the near future.

At the E3 conference in July, Sony announced a TV tuner for Japanese users, designed to connect to the new slimmer PSP it also unveiled there. Weighing in at 17 grams, the tuner will only be useable in Japan as it uses the Japanese ISDB-T broadcasting format.

The precise details of the service and its proposed roll out dates will be announced by SCEE at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany on 22 August.
