Microsoft overhauls business licensing

'Select Plus' to help large companies better manage software

Microsoft has rolled out a new software licensing system aimed at simplifying procedures for large enterprises.

The initiative is an extension of the Microsoft Select Program aimed at companies that manage 250 or more PCs.

The company hopes that the new Select Plus system will improve on the original volume licensing arrangement by making it easier to obtain licences for different machines at different times.

Select Plus will allow large companies to purchase and manage many product licences through a single user ID. It will also allow administrators more easily to purchase and manage software licences in multiple offices and locations.

"Select Plus is a tailored response to customer feedback for greater flexibility and enhanced manageability in purchasing," said Joe Matz, corporate vice president for worldwide licensing and pricing at Microsoft.

"We want to enable an optimal purchasing experience, and simplify the ongoing management of software licences so that companies get the most value out of their investment."

Among the products covered in the programme are Office, Windows Vista and Microsoft's server applications. The company hopes to formally launch Select Plus later this year.

Companies can enter Select Plus by signing up with Microsoft for a new account or though an existing Select business account.

The company also plans to offer the programme through its large business and academic licensing channels.
