iMac colours portable views

Rumours abound that Apple is set to launch a notebook computer with a design inspired by its best-selling iMac systems.

Although there is little evidence to support the burgeoning number of newsgroup postings and Web sites disseminating such gossip, most industry operators agree that it's not a question of if, but of when Apple will announce a portable iMac. After all, it was the success of the original iMac that revitalised the once-ailing company.

Insiders at Apple remain tight-lipped about the prospect of an iMac notebook launch, but the attitude is very much one of 'we can neither confirm, nor deny'.

Indications are that new machines will appear in the US within weeks, with an arrival in the UK before the year is out.

Predictions regarding the possible design range from the likely - a portable based on the current, curvaceous models, to the downright outlandish, such as a machine with an Apple-logo-shaped touchpad.

STOP PRESS: Apple has now confirmed the new machine. Called the iBook, it will be available in both Tangerine and Blueberry hues. More details next month.
